The global exhibition industry is not only of great economic importance, it also functions as a bridge builder between industries, countries and cultures. Global Exhibitions Day on 7 June 2023 was a fitting occasion to take a closer look at the world exhibition industry and its economic impact.

Trade fairs serve a unique purpose: they bring together entire industries, they are networking tools for important decision-makers and their exhibition spaces and attractive supporting programmes offer exciting impulses and innovations. For exhibitors, a professionally planned and implemented trade fair participation can be the most important marketing tool of the business year - provided the trade fair comprises the most important global players in the industry.

According to a survey by the Munich-based research institute IFO, about 60 percent of such globally leading trade fairs are held in Germany. The trade fairs held in Germany are also characterised by a very high level of internationality, according to the survey.

Trade fairs with a long history, such as Interzoo, which will be held for the 38th time next year, are particularly successful in networking exhibitors and trade visitors beyond the trade fair. The world's leading trade fair for the pet industry is thus a prime example of how to facilitate sustainable post-fair business.

Close-up: The economic impact of a trade fair

A survey by the World Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI) in cooperation with Oxford Economics illustrates the enormous influence of the trade fair industry on the global economic system of the 21st century.[1] According to the survey, a total of 3.4 million jobs depend directly and indirectly on trade fairs.  In addition, visitor and exhibitor spending has risen to a total economic impact of 299 billion euros (334 billion US dollars) on both the value chain of the trade fair industry (organisers, venues and service providers) and on tourism-related activities (accommodation, catering and travel). In a nutshell, are an irreplaceable marketing instrument across all sectors and topics, thereby forming an integral element of the value chain through trend reports, educational offerings, innovation launches and networking formats.

Held annually on the first Wednesday in June, Global Exhibitions Day highlights the economic importance of the exhibition industry at local, regional and global level. The day also stresses how important trade fairs remain to be as a market-penetrating marketing tool.

The Interzoo team looks forward to seeing all exhibitors and trade visitors again from 7 – 10 May 2024 at Interzoo 2024 in Nuremberg. The next Global Exhibitions Day will then be held on Wednesday, 5 June 2024.
